July 23rd

After a pumpout and filling up the water tanks we headed to Montauk.

We are anchoring south on the lake. We were close enough to a beach to kayak to. We walked a mile to the famous ditch beach. Crowded on a sunny Sunday with surfers in particular. Very neat.

We walked back and returned to a quiet anchor on the lake.

Walked to town. We tried the Paumanok path, but without our weed Wacker handy, we had to give it up. We found the town of Montauk quite pleasant; a classic beach resort with two stories hotels. We stopped at the grocery store to buy lunch, and had a picnic on the beach. We rented a bike for 24hrs, as we opted out of another treck through high grasses and ticks gallore. Once back on our boat we were ready for a relaxing evening.

With our rental bikes rode to the Montauk light house. Freshly repainted, in fact there was still two painters finishing one side of it when we visited. We walked around, past and to the top. Beautiful sunny day. The museum is very interesting and describes not only the lenses, past and present, but also other light house in the long Island area, the efforts to preserve it, and fight the erosion of the coast. There were also rooms about the native American, the sea rescue teams, the military batteries that used to be there as well as the beach resort development history. We had our picnic lunch and rode back to town to return our bikes with a short hike to Oyster Pond.

We return to the boat with Lifts and relax after a cool shower. A storm crossed the area but didn't stop by Lake Montauk. We even had a beautiful sunset.

We are leaving tomorrow morning for Blick Island. It is our last night in New York and Long Island for a bit.
